For several years, PRC’s annual key drivers analyses have identified safety as one of the most important aspects of care that patients consider when they evaluate their overall experience, and this is true for almost all care settings: inpatient, ED, and ambulatory services. Historically, we have seen few patients elaborate on this topic in their open-ended responses, and it has been challenging for caregivers to wrap their minds around what safety means to patients. With the COVID-19 pandemic and the extensive media attention given to explaining the equipment and strategies that healthcare providers use to keep patients safe from this virus, patients now have a lot to say about the safety efforts they are observing in their doctor’s offices and emergency rooms.
