PRC’s National Health Survey Brief: Adverse Childhood Experiences in the US

April 2, 2024

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood (0-17 years), including not only abuse and neglect, but also aspects of a child’s environment that can undermine a sense of safety, stability, and bonding. Because these traumatic events can have effects that persist for years, the CDC estimates that up to 1.9 million cases of heart disease and 21 million cases of depression could have been potentially avoided by preventing ACEs (www.cdc.gov).

In the PRC National Health Survey, adults throughout the US were asked about their history of adverse childhood experiences through a series of 11 survey questions (aligning with eight ACEs categories), as outlined in the brief.
